The Great Migration

Two million animals, one circle, moving all year long.

What it is

A circle that never stops turning.

More than two million wildebeest, joined by zebra, eland and gazelle, move in a slow clockwise circuit between the southern Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, following rain and fresh grazing. It is not a single event on a single date. The herds are always somewhere, and each month of the year puts them in a different landscape.

Predators travel with them. The Serengeti ecosystem holds around three thousand lions, and cheetah, hyena and leopard work the edges of the columns. Where the route meets the Grumeti and Mara rivers, crocodile and hippo wait in the current. Knowing where the herds should be, and being camped close to it, is the whole craft of a migration safari.
